Facebook’s leaked smartwatch looks like the Apple Watch, but with a notch and a camera

Image
Facebook or “ Meta ”, if the newly announced rebranding is to be followed immediately, apparently has a smartwatch coming out.  This has been rumored for months, but a new leak today all but confirms it. Mark Gurman, who has a strong track record with covering leaks from Apple, revealed in  Bloomberg  today details of the upcoming Facebook, uh, Meta smartwatch (codenamed “Milan” according to leaked codes), including a leaked render. Facebook watch Yes, it looks just like an Apple Watch, except it has a late 2018-era Android waterdrop notch housing a camera.  Do note the notch eats into the bottom of the display, not the top. This image was found by app developer Steve Moser, inside Facebook View, the app designed to work with Facebook’s most recent hardware release, a pair of smart sunglasses (also with a camera attached) named Ray-Ban Stories (the iconic sunglasses maker partnered with Facebook for the product). The camera on the watch should be able to shoot photos and videos, and th

Breaking News - Facebook changes its name to Meta in major rebrand

Image
Facebook has changed its name to Meta as part of a major rebrand. The company, which announced the change at its annual developer conference, said it would better "encompass" what the firm now does. It also revealed plans for a metaverse - an online world where people can game, work and communicate in a virtual environment, often using VR headsets. The name change follows a series of negative stories about Facebook, based on documents leaked by an ex-employee. Frances Haugen has accused the company of putting "profits over safety". In 2015, Google restructured its company calling its parent firm Alphabet, however, the name has not caught on.

Instagram finally lets everyone add links to their stories

Image
Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms in the world, and to prevent abuse on the platform, there are some features that you need to jump through additional hoops to get. One major feature that was locked behind a follower count was the ability to share links to your stories.  Previously, you needed to either be verified or have a large number of followers to share links onto your Instagram story, which meant a lot of people couldn’t share links. Now that’s changing, as Instagram is finally letting anyone add a link to their story in the form of a sticker if they want to. The feature ( via  The Verge ) will apparently be removed from accounts that use it to share misinformation or hate speech, meaning that it will still be policed, just that everyone will have it by default. Previously, you could add a “swipe up” gesture to stories if you met the criteria to be able to share links to your story, though the company phased that out and introduced link stickers back in

Dela Coffie's thought on the grim reality of NDC agenda 2024

Image
It’s quite tricky to capture the correlations of the 2019 NDC presidential primaries, and the forthcoming race ahead of election 2024. But here’s two school of thought within the NDC over the direction of the party and who will face either Dr Bawumia or Alan Kyeremanten in 2024;   The first school of thought says, Mahama ought to be given the opportunity to go for his second term unopposed.  This group believes that he has what it takes to win power for the party in 2024. On the other hand, others believes giving Mahama another shot at the nomination means automatic relegation of the NDC to the political abyss for a very long time to come.  This group is of the view that Mahama can't win against any NPP candidate and that his nomination by the NDC will signal perpetual opposition for the party.  That brings me to the other grim reality of NDC 2024 politics, Mahama is certainly going to run on the legacy of the four years he served as President while a fresh face is going to come in

Security researchers say iPhone users should uninstall Facebook from their handsets

Image
The first batch of commercials that Apple created to help sell its new smartphone back in 2007 included one that was aimed at Facebook users.  "If you love Facebook so much that you check it every time you're at the computer, just think how great it would be to check it every time you're, well, nowhere near your computer."  Of course, back then there was no App Store and you would have to use the mobile Safari browser to access the site. Facebook uses your phone's accelerometer to collect personal data Now, over 14 years later, iOS users are being warned by security researchers (via Forbes) that they need to delete the Facebook app from their phones.  Why? Because even if they opt-out of being tracked by third-party apps, Facebook still collects location data using metadata from their pictures and IP addresses.  Facebook admits that it collects information in this manner, but won't discuss why it is wrong for them to do so when a user chooses not to be tracked

Private schools licence renewal now 3 years - Education Minister

Image
Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum The renewal of licences for established schools will now be done every three years, the Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has directed. The schools are, however, supposed to pay their licence (subscription) fees yearly. Explaining the rationale for the decision, the minister said the yearly licensing “puts the schools on edge that this year, they are licensed, next year they may not be licensed and so, what we have directed as a ministry is that the licensing regime should be three years. “In that way, we are separating licensing from the mere payment of fees that are due to National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA),” Dr Adutwum explained. He said what NaSIA sought to do with the publication of the list of schools that had not paid their licences for the 2021/2022 was meant to indicate that those schools were “delinquent” and not that they were not licensed. “All that NaSIA sought to do was to indicate that their fees have dela

WhatsApp tests a new redesign for Picture-in-Picture mode

Image
WhatsApp has had picture-in-picture mode since 2018. PiP mode is convenient; when somebody sends you a video link from YouTube, Instagram, or Facebook, it lets you play the video in a small floating window right within the chat, so you don’t have to leave the conversation. While the feature has mostly remained unchanged over the years, WhatsApp is finally giving it a facelift in the latest update. According to  WABetainfo ,  WhatsApp is testing a new redesign for the picture-in-picture mode that adds a new control bar to the video player. The control bar appears at the bottom of the video and features controls like the pause/resume button, full-screen button, and close button. Previously these controls appeared on the video feed itself and kind of got in the way of the viewing experience. But with the dedicated control bar, you now get an unobstructed view of the video feed. You can check out the new picture-in-picture mode design in the screenshot attached below: The picture-in-pictur

Facebook could no longer be called Facebook as of next week

Image
Facebook wants to change its company name as soon as next week, according to a new report from  The Verge .   The new name will reportedly reflect Facebook’s focus on building the metaverse, a concept that has quickly become a buzzword in the tech world in recent times. Mark Zuckerberg plans to talk about the name change at the upcoming annual Connect conference on October 28, but it could be revealed sooner, the report says.  The rebrand will likely position Facebook as a separate product under a new parent company that also oversees other products like Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, and more .  The move would be similar to what  Google   did back in 2015 when it set up a new parent company called Alphabet . “We will effectively transition from people seeing us as primarily being a social media company to being a metaverse company,” Mark Zuckerberg  told  The Verge back in July. He also previously said that the metaverse is “going to be a big focus, and I think that this is just going

It’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and companies are taking this opportunity to make their products safer for users. We’ve already seen Mozilla add password auto-fill support on Firefox for Android.   Now, Google wants to make your online experience more secure by introducing critical improvements to how you sign in on different apps and services. The most notable of these changes is a feature that lets you easily access your saved passwords via the Google app on your smartphone. In a recent    announcement ,  Google revealed that you will now be able to access passwords saved in Google’s password manager more conveniently. If you’re an ardent Chrome user, you would already be familiar with the password manager built into the browser. It lets you store passwords whenever you sign up on a new website, allowing you to quickly log in the next time you visit that website. The same password manager is also available on other products, including Android and the Google app. But it doesn’t al

WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook have all gone down in a major outage

Image
The three apps – which are all owned by Facebook, and run on shared infrastructure – all completely stopped working shortly before 5pm. Other products that are part of the same family of apps, such as Facebook Workplace, also stopped working. Visitors to the Facebook website simply saw an error page or a message that their browser could not connect. The WhatsApp and Instagram apps continued to work, but did not show new content, including any messages sent or received during the problems. Facebook’s outages happen relatively rarely but tend to be vast in their impact, not least because they affect three of the world’s biggest apps. The company is often cryptic about the causes of any issues, and does not tend to explain them even after they are fixed. In 2019, for instance, it suffered its biggest outage in years – and said only that it had “triggered an issue” during “routine maintenance operations”. In a leaked transcript published in The Verge in 2019, chief executive Mark Zuckerber

I quit teaching due to hunger, salary was so poor - Special Prosecutor

Image
Special Prosecutor Kiss Agyabeng has revealed that hunger and poor salary were the reasons he quit teaching.  According to him, his salary as a lecturer at the Faculty of Law of the University of Ghana was nothing to write home about so he decided to drop the chalk.  Speaking in an exclusive interview on Peace FM, Kissi Agyabeng did not shy away from the fact that Ghanaian teachers are poorly paid despite their hard work and dedication.   He had the following to say: “I have it on good authority that lecturers at the University of Ghana are not paid more than $100 per month. What is the current value of the dollar in cedis? So, even if a Legon lecturer is paid GHS5000, what can he do with it?"
