Some youth in the Northern Region, noted for engaging in cyber fraud known in Ghana as "sakawa", have allegedly bribed a prominent chief of the area to rename his town with a foreign name. “They are proposing two names for the area, Galaxy City or La Palmas,” Northern Regional Minister Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna has said. Even though the Minister would not name the chief involved, he said the chief initially rejected the suggestions and drove the "sakawa" boys out of his palace. However, the determined boys, who said the name of the town “was not palatable”, decided to work through the chief’s advisors (elders). Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna said the boys bribed the elders with ₵1,000. They in turn led the boys to the chief, whom they offered a ₵4,000 bounty. Apparently having the backing of the traditional leaders, these boys went to town misbehaving, splashing monies on the streets and daring anyone to come after them. Meanwhile...
My take is that many politicians, who are in the habit of plundering the peoples’ wealth, will have to face justice now or someday. My conviction has reinforced what the people have been saying that some of our political office holders are just there to steal and loot. Corruption is a contributory factor to Ghana’s underdevelopment, therefore, there is the need to intensify the war against it. A lot of money that could have been used to benefit Ghanaians is being siphoned away by our leaders. There is a need for us to review our statute books to ensure that those who steal public funds receive capital punishment. That is the only way to solve this problem in Ghana otherwise it would continue to be the same story. I therefore, called for the establishment of a separate court to try corruption cases, noting that the present system was being used to frustrate prosecution of offenders. The system now is that those defending these politicians in corruption trials and those prosecuting,...
Deputy Minister of Trade, Murtala Mohammed, has rendered an unqualified apology to the president and Ghanaians in general for his recent RADIO outbursts. Incensed by what he says are attempts by some MPs to unseat him, and daring them to do their worse, Murtala alleged that his detractors have gone to the extreme of bribing chiefs and opinion leaders in the Northern Region with "filthy, ill-gotten money". Though he would not mention names when he spoke to Diamond FM, Murtala also threatened to expose an MP who is conniving with a woman to take nude pictures of a cabinet minister. “It is pathetic, absolutely pathetic: it's unethical, it's so funny, it's so stupid, it's so silly, it's nasty, it's un-Islamic for people in the same party to be sitting down and their intention is about how they can get someone out of Parliament”, the Deputy Minister said. His comments attracted an avalanche of public criticisms which caused the Chief of Staff to s...
