Are You Really Muted? Mute Buttons in Video Conferencing Apps

 

Researchers from the University of Wisconsin and the University of Chicago have found in a research that muting popular video calling apps does not actually mute the microphone, continuing to record from it. 

According to the researchers, the mute buttons in the apps do not deactivate the microphone, but only mute it for other users. The worst part is that it's hard to know when an app isn't analyzing sound, since the microphone and camera on indicator doesn't work with all video calling apps. 

Zoom, Microsoft Teams/Skype, Cisco Webex, Google Meet, Jitsi Meet and Discord are on the list of users who like to eavesdrop. Every minute they send packets with your audio data to their servers❗️
