Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) and the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) are threatening to strike by the end of the month if government fails to pay all monies it owes the teachers.

The decision, according to the group, follows government’s inability to meet a September 17 deadline to pay all outstanding debts it owed the teachers.

The two teacher unions in August threatened to lay down their tools if the government failed to pay their allowances which have been in arrears for more than two years.

President of the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Emmanuel Opoku in an interview with Citi News said letters have been sent to the education ministry and its allied agencies notifying them about the groups’ decision.

“Our ultimatum ended yesterday, as at yesterday we’ve not received any information from the Ministry of education or GES…today, we are sending a letter to Labour Commission, ministry of education and GES to inform them of our decision to declare a strike by the end of the month. We are also embarking on this decision being guided by the labour laws on strike action,” he said.

UDS Vice Chancellor kicks against conversion of polytechnics into universities

Vice Chancellor of the University for Development Studies (UDS) Prof. Gabriel Ayum Teye has made a case against the planned conversion of polytechnics into universities. According to him, the move will only increase the graduate unemployment population which currently stands at 300,000. This is according to data from the Institute of Statistical and Economic Research (ISSER). “Now we have 10 public universities that produce graduates and by next month we will have 16 public universities in Ghana. “So if you’re having problems with 10 and you add another 6 to it making 16 are you solving the problem or compounding it,” he queried. Gov’t Intervenes As Court Orders Auctioning Of GHANASCO Cars

The Northern Regional Director of Education, Mohammed Haroon Cambodia has confirmed government will be paying a staggering GHC400,000 as judgment debt to a private citizen in order to stop the auctioning of vehicles belonging to the Ghana Senior High School in Tamale. Government is offering the bailout following a chronic transport difficulty that has hit the school for the last two years after a court order impounded the only bus for students and a brand new official pickup vehicle. Two Nissan patrol vehicles belonging to the Education directorate were also taken by the court. The vehicles were confiscated to be auctioned to pay up salary arrears of a former headmaster of the school who accused the school and education service of injustices including inappropriate dismissal and concealing his promotion letter.
