‘Macho men’ storm anti-Haruna Iddrisu press conference, threaten to beat-up organizers and journalists

There was near bloodbath Tuesday afternoon when a group of unidentified macho men in a Hollywood movie style stormed the premises of the National Democratic Congress youth group, the Founders’ Fun Club where an anti-Haruna Iddrisu press conference was ongoing.

The macho men who the NDC Founders’ Fun Club accuses of being members of the camp of the Tamale South Member of Parliament threatened to beat up the members of the youth group and the pressmen covering the news conference if it was not brought to an end.

Justice News’ Abubakari Yussif who was covering the news conference reports that a scuffle that lasted for not less than 20 minutes ensued between the macho men and the youth group.

He said journalists who were covering the press conference had to run for cover and watched from a safe distance as the scuffle continued.

Yussif said it took the intervention of some community members in Kakpagyili, a suburb of Tamale to bring the situation under control.

He reports that the Secretary of the group, Al-Jafaru Iddris warned that they won’t be cohered to vote for a selfish candidate.

Yussif quoted the Secretary as saying that “We wish to take this opportunity to send a word of caution to these macho men from Tamale central to keep off from Tamale South for we do not wish to see a repetition of what happened at Jakpahi in the Kumbungu constituency in 2004 in Tamale south”.

Accusations

Iddris raised concerns over what he described as deliberate attempts by the executives of the constituency to get the incumbent MP of the area re-elected in their upcoming primaries.

This act, according to him if not checked has the tendency of bringing disturbances in the constituency and affect the party negatively in the 2016 elections.

“Certain activities in the party by the constituency executives with the support of the Hon. MP have the tendency of bringing disturbances in the constituency” Iddrisu said.

He accused the constituency executives of secretly registering members who they can influence to vote for their preferred candidate in the biometric registration of party members.

“The Constituency executives Somewhere last week invited all branch chairmen and their secretaries to Radach Hotel and informed them that the constituency has been given only 12 booklets to compete the biometric registration exercise.”

“In view of the creation of new polling stations in the constituency by the Electoral Commission and the limited number of booklets, it was decided by the constituency executives that the exercise will be limited to these newly created polling stations to our outer dismay and shockingly the constituency executives decided to do a secret registration of members whom they think they can remote” he noted.

The NDC is expanding its electoral college that will allow all card bearing members of the party to vote in its presidential and parliamentary primaries.

The Founders’ Fun Club appealed to the president, national and regional executives of the party to call the constituency executives to order.
