12 die in Kumbungu Taxi accident

Twelve people including two babies died on the spot when two taxis they were traveling in caught fire after colliding with each other at Chanzegu junction on the Tamale-Kumbungu road Saturday afternoon.

Two others sustained various degrees of injury.

Eyewitnesses say one of the taxis which was heading to Tamale from Kumbungu wrongfully overtook another vehicle at Chanzegu junction and in the process crashed with the other taxi which was heading to Kumbungu from Tamale.

The Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder of one of the taxis blast, setting the two taxis ablaze. Residents are surprised that 14 people were in the two taxis.

According to Ghana’s traffic laws, taxis must not carry more than five people; four passengers and a driver.

However speaking to Justice News, Kumbungu Station manager, Alhaji Abdulai Chairman said the taxi from Kumbungu was carrying five passengers with two babies and two drivers; with one of the drivers in the boot of the taxi.

The other taxi from Tamale he added was carrying five passengers.

He however was quick to add that the taxi from Kumbungu did not load at the Kumbungu station, hence taking the advantage to overload.

Alhaji Abdulai said seven of the passengers from Kumbungu were members of the same family who were en-route to Tamale for a funeral.

The twelve have since been buried in accordance with Islamic tradition.

Gov’t Intervenes As Court Orders Auctioning Of GHANASCO Cars

The Northern Regional Director of Education, Mohammed Haroon Cambodia has confirmed government will be paying a staggering GHC400,000 as judgment debt to a private citizen in order to stop the auctioning of vehicles belonging to the Ghana Senior High School in Tamale. Government is offering the bailout following a chronic transport difficulty that has hit the school for the last two years after a court order impounded the only bus for students and a brand new official pickup vehicle. Two Nissan patrol vehicles belonging to the Education directorate were also taken by the court. The vehicles were confiscated to be auctioned to pay up salary arrears of a former headmaster of the school who accused the school and education service of injustices including inappropriate dismissal and concealing his promotion letter.
