Ramatu Mahama, wife of former Veep Aliu Mahama passes on at 70

Ramatu Aliu Mahama (Neè Egala), the wife of the late former Vice President Aliu Mahama, has passed on at age 70.

Affectionately known as Hajia Ramatu, she died yesterday, her son, Farouk Mahama, who is also the Member of Parliament for Yendi has confirmed.

"It is with deep sorrow, I announce the passing of my beloved mom, the former Second Lady of the Republic, Hajia Ramatu Aliu Mahama (neè Egala). She passed on peaceful in Accra at the Korlebu Teaching Hospital earlier this afternoon. 

 Farouk Mahama announced.

"The family has lost a great pillar. Burial and funeral rites would be conducted in accordance with Islamic traditions. Further information will be provided in due course,"

 he added.

Graphic Online's Mohammed Fugu reports from Tamale that sources close to the family had disclosed that, the late Hajia Ramatu Mahama had been unwell for some time.

In line with the Islamic tradition, the mortal remains of the late Hajia Ramatu Mahama is expected to be flown to Tamale Friday for interment.

Hajia Ramatu Aliu Mahama was an educationist in Tamale.

She earned the title ‘Mma Ramatu’ due to her love and care for children. 

She was the daughter of the late Imoro Egala, a Minister for Trade and Industry and first Ghanaian chairman of COCOBOD, in the first republic and a long-standing political stalwart in Ghana through to the third republic; doubling as a founder of the PNP now PNC.

The late Hajia Ramatu Mahama left behind four children - Salma Mahama, Farouk Mahama, Fayad Mahama and Halim Mahama.

Vice Chancellor of the University for Development Studies (UDS) Prof. Gabriel Ayum Teye has made a case against the planned conversion of polytechnics into universities. According to him, the move will only increase the graduate unemployment population which currently stands at 300,000. Gov’t Intervenes As Court Orders Auctioning Of GHANASCO Cars

The Northern Regional Director of Education, Mohammed Haroon Cambodia has confirmed government will be paying a staggering GHC400,000 as judgment debt to a private citizen in order to stop the auctioning of vehicles belonging to the Ghana Senior High School in Tamale. Government is offering the bailout following a chronic transport difficulty that has hit the school for the last two years after a court order impounded the only bus for students and a brand new official pickup vehicle. Two Nissan patrol vehicles belonging to the Education directorate were also taken by the court. The vehicles were confiscated to be auctioned to pay up salary arrears of a former headmaster of the school who accused the school and education service of injustices including inappropriate dismissal and concealing his promotion letter.
