New Vice Chancellor takes over UDS administration

Professor Gabriel Ayum Teye, the new Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University for Development Students (UDS) has taken over the administration of the university from Professor Haruna Yakubu for a five-year term.

Professor Haruna Yakubu, the former Vice Chancellor, speaking to deans, heads of department and some council members at the Dungu campus of the university during the handing over ceremony, advised Professor Teye to operate an open door administration for success.

He said he had learnt a lot from the UDS over the five-year period that he worked as the vice chancellor saying, “I must admit and confess that I did not know much about UDS when I took over because UDS was perceived as a university only for the people of the north”.

He said it was when he had the opportunity to serve that he realized that UDS had what the other universities in Ghana did not have and mentioned its trimester programme as one of the best in the country.

Professor Yakubu also said the UDS international programmes were unique, and that, the university is ranked 103 in Africa, 58th in sub Saharan Africa, whilst in Ghana it is ranked third and tasked the new VC to work hard to ensure that UDS improved or maintained its achievements.

He expressed hope that with the caliber of people in the UDS administration, including students, the university would grow from strength to strength and assured that he would continue to avail himself for advice for the growth of the University.

Professor Gabriel Ayum Teye expressed gratitude to the UDS Governing Council for appointing him and assured that he would run an open door administration and appealed to deans and other members of the university not to sit on the fence but should work as a team to realize the UDS dream.

He said he would work harder to build upon what Professor Yakubu left, and that, his administration would not condone wrong doing.

“You don’t need to like me before you work with me. You are working here because you like UDS and you need to justify your inclusion in the UDS success”.

He said, “Let all of us put our shoulders on the UDS wheel and push it forward to a favourable destination so that in future we can proudly say we were part of the success stories.
