5 students arrested, others hospitalised in Bolgatanga school riot

Five students of the Bolgatanga Senior High School in the Upper East Region have been arrested following an overnight rampage by some students who were protesting the death of a colleague on Monday.

An intervention by the police to prevent further clashes also led to five other students being hospitalized for various degrees of injuries.

The students are protesting the death of their colleague who according to them, jumped to his death after the Senior House Master gave him a hot chase.

According to Citi News’ Upper East correspondent, Fedrick Awuni, “at the girls dormitory, five girls who were seriously suffocating were rushed to the Bolgantanga regional hospital for treatment after the Police fired tear gas at the students.”

The Police Commander of the Upper East Regional Police Command, ASP Boakye said some policemen were injured in the process and were also rushed to the hospital while two of their patrol screens were damaged.

ASP Boakye justified why the Police fired the tear gas and added that two students were later arrested in addition to the other three, taking the total number of students arrested to five.

He said some culprits had been arrested, while others had been rushed to hospital.

“We have made one or two arrests so far and I know one or two policemen are hurt and they have been rushed to the hospital.”

“All the two vehicles we brought were damaged. The intelligence we got was that they wanted to burn down some houses but its like from every corner they started throwing stones and what we did was to duischarge tear gas to disperse them.”
