Everything you need to know about Switch 3.1

The University of Cape Coast and the Ashanti branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) have collaboratively launched a fresh educational program named Switch 3.1.

Switch 3.1 has been designed to provide a unique opportunity for basic level teachers to transition and teach at the secondary level. This program aims to bridge the gap between these two educational levels and address the need for qualified educators in secondary schools.

Details are as follows;

1. Who qualifies to apply?

Any teacher from anywhere across Ghana who has a degree in basic education  and wish to have another degree in secondary education. Diploma or HND holders do not qualify to apply.

If you are already at the senior high school and do not hold the requisite qualification to teach the subject you are handling, this is an opportunity to acquire the certificate.

2. What is the duration of the programe?

Is three (3) semesters in one year. Is a specialisation programme which would afford learners indept knowledge in content and pedagogical skills. There will be teaching pratice aspect at the senior high school under supervision. 

3. How is the programme going to be organised?

Weekends lecture on face to face and a midweek lecture on zoom.

4. How much will the programme cost?

It starts with the purchasing of the forms for one hundred and fifty-five cedis at the specified banks or through momo to generate your pin for the online application via www.ucc.edu.gh. From today the 24th day of May, 2023, the forms are available in the banks specified on the flyer. Deadline for the purchase of forms is 15th July, 2023.

Fees per semester ranges between 1500 to 1600 with flexible terms of payment. 

5. Study centres for the programme?

We have study centres across all the 10 regional capitals and other centres would be created based on the location of majority of the applicants to ensure the study centres are closer to the students. 

In the interim, these are the study centres;

  1. Kumasi 
  2. Accra
  3. Tema
  4. Kasoa
  5. Sefwi wiaso
  6. Ho
  7. Sunyani
  8. Tamale
  9. Techiman
  10. Bolga
  11. Wa
  12. Koforidua
  13. Cape coast
  14. Takoradi

Other centres may be created to ensure conveniency.

6. I am already teaching a subject at the Senior high school, can i apply to acquire a new certificate in other fields?

Yes and No. Yes if you pursued that course as a minor at the university or it is part of the subjects you pursued at the senior high school level then you can. However an Arts student can not switch to pursue a science programme.

7. Will students be allowed to major in some areas?

Yes, the programme is a specialisation programme. The sciences involves specialisation in physics, chemistry or biology. Home economics involves specialisation in food and nutrition or clothing and textiles. Core mathematics and elective mathematics. 

8. Is it just a certificate programme?

No, is a full time university programme just that you are being admitted at level 300 to specialise and complete because you have the fundamentals already. Is the reason why it is a three semester programme.  The programme has been fully mounted on the University of Cape Coast platform.

250 Labone students sacked for non-performance

Two hundred and fifty students of the Labone Senior High School (SHS) have been sacked for their abysmal performance in the end-of-year examination in July, this year. The students, who had an average of four failures in eight subjects, were sent packing when the first term of the 2014/2015 academic year began. Out of the number sacked, 155 of them were second-year students who were supposed to go to Form Three, while 95 were first-year students entering their second year.Also, 171 students who had an average of three failures in the examination have been asked to repeat their forms. About 800 Form Two students of the school were supposed to enter Form Three, while the number of first years who were expected to enter second year was 1,000. Family To Auction GHANASCO Cars As Govt Fails To Intervene

The family of late Lionel Mahama, a former headmaster of the Ghana Senior High School (Ghanasco) in Tamale, who won a court case against the school and Education service for wrongful demotion and freeze of salary, is ready to auction the confiscated assets of the school after failure by authorities, including government to pay a judgment debt awarded by the court.  Diana Awuni, daughter of the late headmaster told Starr News the family had finally secured a clearance document from the court and that a Kumasi-based auctioneer would arrive in Tamale in a fortnight to begin the process to liquidate the vehicles. Mahama Free SHS Is GH¢50

It has emerged that the free senior high school education promised by President John Mahama, which he claims will be set in motion from the 2015/2016 academic year, is going to be at a cost of only GH¢50.00 per student. This is because with 365,000 day students, the government has budgeted GH¢18 million for the first term. Gov’t Intervenes As Court Orders Auctioning Of GHANASCO Cars

The Northern Regional Director of Education, Mohammed Haroon Cambodia has confirmed government will be paying a staggering GHC400,000 as judgment debt to a private citizen in order to stop the auctioning of vehicles belonging to the Ghana Senior High School in Tamale. Government is offering the bailout following a chronic transport difficulty that has hit the school for the last two years after a court order impounded the only bus for students and a brand new official pickup vehicle. Two Nissan patrol vehicles belonging to the Education directorate were also taken by the court. The vehicles were confiscated to be auctioned to pay up salary arrears of a former headmaster of the school who accused the school and education service of injustices including inappropriate dismissal and concealing his promotion letter.
