All-girls private boarding school opened to empower women

Legacy Girls College, a privately owned all-girls boarding school has been opened in Akuse,  a town in the Lower Manya Krobo district of the Eastern Region.

Speaking at the grand opening of the senior high school, Co-Founder of the institution, Ellen Hagan, admonished young girls to excel in the world of work, know their self-worth, discover their purpose and be more solution-oriented in making the world a better place.

The inaugural ceremony, according to school, was to introduce Legacy Girls College to guests and Ghana as a whole and to acquaint them with the ideals on which the school was founded.

In a keynote address, CEO of Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, Mawuena Trebarh, noted that every girl who attends Legacy Girls College is destined to be successful and leave a worthy legacy because of the foundation on which the school was established.

The principal of the school, Maranatha Kove, revealed that Legacy Girls College has a mission to “nurture the immense potential of girls to be whatever they want to be in a fast-changing and increasingly complex world".

She adds that education for the Legacy girls will be aimed at preparing them to succeed in the real world by training them to be confident and caring with state of the art facilities that make learning enjoyable.

The school crest was unveiled by Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, CEO of Micro Finance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) and Her Excellency Ms. Margit Thomsen, Danish Ambassador to Ghana.

The Ambassador said the timing for the inauguration of Legacy College - which aims also to empower women - was appropriate because it coincides with Denmark's celebration of 100 years of women’s voting rights.

The crest was then explained by Queen Nana Adwoa Awindor, Executive Director at Obaapa Development Foundation and Premier Productions.

Essie Anno Sackey, Co-Founder of Legacy Girls College, in her closing remarks, thanked all those present and encouraged them to choose Legacy Girls College in order to give their girls the grounding needed to make a meaningful impact in society.

Also present at the event was Dr. Erica Bennet, Ambassador for the Diasporan African Forum (DAF); Nana Oye Lithur, Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection; Dr. Mrs. Sylvia Boye, former Head of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) and Mrs. Joyce Boeh - Ocansey, Head of Recruitment, LAINE Services Limited.

Courses offered at Legacy Girls College are Enhanced Ghanaian curriculum and British Curriculum for Senior High Schools with ancillary departments for BECE remedial.

Family To Auction GHANASCO Cars As Govt Fails To Intervene

The family of late Lionel Mahama, a former headmaster of the Ghana Senior High School (Ghanasco) in Tamale, who won a court case against the school and Education service for wrongful demotion and freeze of salary, is ready to auction the confiscated assets of the school after failure by authorities, including government to pay a judgment debt awarded by the court.  Diana Awuni, daughter of the late headmaster told Starr News the family had finally secured a clearance document from the court and that a Kumasi-based auctioneer would arrive in Tamale in a fortnight to begin the process to liquidate the vehicles. 250 Labone students sacked for non-performance

Two hundred and fifty students of the Labone Senior High School (SHS) have been sacked for their abysmal performance in the end-of-year examination in July, this year. The students, who had an average of four failures in eight subjects, were sent packing when the first term of the 2014/2015 academic year began. Out of the number sacked, 155 of them were second-year students who were supposed to go to Form Three, while 95 were first-year students entering their second year.Also, 171 students who had an average of three failures in the examination have been asked to repeat their forms. About 800 Form Two students of the school were supposed to enter Form Three, while the number of first years who were expected to enter second year was 1,000. The action, according to the Headmistress of the school, Mrs Mary Amankwah, was in line with the school’s policy agreed upon by both the students and their parents at the time oftheir admissions. Soldiers Brutalise Students Of Wa Islamic School

Two students of the Islamic Senior High School in Wa were admitted to hospital yesterday following a high-handed military action to quell a stand-off between the students and the school authorities. The students, a male and a female, were the main casualties of an apparent simultaneous police and military action to break the front of the students, as their peaceful protest degenerated into chaos. The soldiers allegedly invaded the girls’ dormitory and started beating the riotous students following a call to the police to go to the school and restore order. The two students were being treated and monitored at the Islamic Hospital in Wa as of press time yesterday, hospital sources told the Daily Graphic. Gov’t Intervenes As Court Orders Auctioning Of GHANASCO Cars

The Northern Regional Director of Education, Mohammed Haroon Cambodia has confirmed government will be paying a staggering GHC400,000 as judgment debt to a private citizen in order to stop the auctioning of vehicles belonging to the Ghana Senior High School in Tamale. Government is offering the bailout following a chronic transport difficulty that has hit the school for the last two years after a court order impounded the only bus for students and a brand new official pickup vehicle. Two Nissan patrol vehicles belonging to the Education directorate were also taken by the court. The vehicles were confiscated to be auctioned to pay up salary arrears of a former headmaster of the school who accused the school and education service of injustices including inappropriate dismissal and concealing his promotion letter.
