Mother, daughter arrested for selling ‘Wee Toffees’ in Tamale

A Mother and her daughter have been arrested by police in Tamale for allegedly producing and selling toffees suspected to be produced from cannabis.

The suspects; Aisha Tahiru, 45, and Amina Mutarla, 27, were arrested at Sakasaka, a suburb of Tamale by the Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Northern Regional Police Command.

The suspects are said to have been selling the ‘Wee Toffees’ to pupils in various schools and a section of the general public in the Tamale metropolis.


Confirmation

The Northern Regional Police Crime Officer, Superintendent Bernard Baba Ananga who confirmed the arrest to Graphic Online indicated that the suspects have been charged with possession of narcotics drugs, prohibited business relating to narcotic drugs and the supply of narcotic drugs.

He explained that the suspects were picked up while they were mixing the coconut toffee with substances suspected to be cannabis, adding that 400 pieces of the laced toffee were retrieved after a search was conducted at their shop and rooms.

He said the suspects would be arraigned before the court after investigations.

“When we were making the arrest, some school children who were passing said they have been buying the toffees and that it was their favorite but they never knew that it was produced with cannabis," he said.

"So, we are going to investigate to ascertain how they get the cannabis and other substances to produce the toffees” Supt. Ananga noted.


Advice

He believed that many people could be involved in the illicit trade, adding that investigations were ongoing to arrest the accomplices.

He, however, advised the public to be careful with the kind of locally made toffees they buy as some could be produced from illegal substances.

250 Labone students sacked for non-performance

Two hundred and fifty students of the Labone Senior High School (SHS) have been sacked for their abysmal performance in the end-of-year examination in July, this year. The students, who had an average of four failures in eight subjects, were sent packing when the first term of the 2014/2015 academic year began. Out of the number sacked, 155 of them were second-year students who were supposed to go to Form Three, while 95 were first-year students entering their second year.Also, 171 students who had an average of three failures in the examination have been asked to repeat their forms. About 800 Form Two students of the school were supposed to enter Form Three, while the number of first years who were expected to enter second year was 1,000. Soldiers Brutalise Students Of Wa Islamic School

Two students of the Islamic Senior High School in Wa were admitted to hospital yesterday following a high-handed military action to quell a stand-off between the students and the school authorities. The students, a male and a female, were the main casualties of an apparent simultaneous police and military action to break the front of the students, as their peaceful protest degenerated into chaos. Gov’t Intervenes As Court Orders Auctioning Of GHANASCO Cars

The Northern Regional Director of Education, Mohammed Haroon Cambodia has confirmed government will be paying a staggering GHC400,000 as judgment debt to a private citizen in order to stop the auctioning of vehicles belonging to the Ghana Senior High School in Tamale. Government is offering the bailout following a chronic transport difficulty that has hit the school for the last two years after a court order impounded the only bus for students and a brand new official pickup vehicle. Two Nissan patrol vehicles belonging to the Education directorate were also taken by the court.
