Facebook Retools Messaging Again by Adding Calling to Main App

Facebook Inc. is bringing voice and video calling to its flagship social networking service, the latest attempt to fine-tune its communications features after spinning off Messenger as a separate app in 2014. 

Some users, including those in the U.S., will be able to place voice or video calls from the Facebook app beginning Monday. The new feature is just a test, but it’s meant to reduce the need to jump back and forth between Facebook’s main app and its Messenger service, said Connor Hayes, director of product management at Messenger. 

Facebook also started testing a limited version of Messenger’s inbox in the core Facebook app last fall. Messenger was once built into Facebook’s app, but the company spun it out seven years ago, forcing users to download a separate app in order send private messages from a mobile phone. 

Monday’s test is the latest in what has been a slow but consistent effort internally to integrate all of Facebook’s apps and services. Facebook is starting to think of Messenger as a service rather than just a stand-alone app, Hayes said. That means people will use the technology alongside other things -- say, relying on Messenger to video chat while watching videos or playing games on Facebook. Voice and video calls that use Messenger technology are available on other Facebook platforms, including Instagram, Oculus and Portal devices. 

“You’re going to start to see quite a bit more of this over time,” Hayes said. 

He describes Messenger as the “connective tissue for people to be together when apart, regardless of which service they’re choosing to use.”

Facebook first enabled messaging between its Instagram app and Messenger last September, and there are plans to bring the capability to its WhatsApp messaging service as well. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg has argued that integrating the company’s messaging services is a benefit to users, letting them reach more people and reducing the need to download or jump between separate apps. 

Critics argue that Facebook is intertwining its services in a way that could make it impossible to break the company up. Federal regulators filed an antitrust lawsuit last week to try and force Facebook to spin off its Instagram and WhatsApp acquisitions.

District Assembly’s Vehicles Seized Over Indebtedness

A Bolgatanga High Court has impounded two vehicles belonging to the Talensi District Assembly for its inability to pay its debt to Tomore and Sons Company Ltd. The two cars are the official black Nissan Patrol of the District Chief Executive, with registration number GN 1790-11, and a red Navara Pick-Up with registration number GT 3591-11, which is the official vehicle for the District Coordinating Director. Tomore and Sons Company Ltd is demanding a total amount of GH¢ 81,345 from the Talensi District Assembly. The total debt comprises the principal amount of GH¢51,000, an interest of GH¢25,245 accrued from October 2012 to October 2014, and the legal cost of GH¢5,100. In October 2011, Tomore and Son Company Ltd, a construction firm, was awarded a contract by the Talensi District Assembly, then the Talensi-Nabdam District Assembly, to build a one-unit three classroom block with a store, four seater KVIP and urinal at Woog, all valued at GH¢60,000. Fire guts NORRIP warehouse

A warehouse belonging to the Northern Regional Rural Integrated Programme (NORRIP) in Tamale was yesterday destroyed by fire. The cause of the fire, which was said to have begun at about 1:45 p.m. yesterday, is yet to be established. Items However, items destroyed at the facility included vulcanising machines, wielding machines, car spare parts, refrigerators, mattresses, beds, furniture, pumping machines, air filters, and four 20-footer containers containing varied household items. In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the acting Programme Manager of NORRIP, Mr Henry Ankrah, said his attention was drawn to the fire at about 2 p.m. by some staff members at the United Nations (UN) offices, which was close to the warehouse. The Northern Regional Director of Education, Mohammed Haroon Cambodia has confirmed government will be paying a staggering GHC400,000 as judgment debt to a private citizen in order to stop the auctioning of vehicles belonging to the Ghana Senior High School in Tamale. Government is offering the bailout following a chronic transport difficulty that has hit the school for the last two years after a court order impounded the only bus for students and a brand new official pickup vehicle. Two Nissan patrol vehicles belonging to the Education directorate were also taken by the court. The vehicles were confiscated to be auctioned to pay up salary arrears of a former headmaster of the school who accused the school and education service of injustices including inappropriate dismissal and concealing his promotion letter.
