Pong Tamale Veterinary College to be upgraded into University of Agriculture – Bawumia hints

The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has dropped a hint that the government intends to upgrade the Animal Health And Production College at Pong Tamale in the Savelugu District of the Northern Region into a University of Agriculture.

According to him, this would ensure that the study of agriculture, which is the mainstay of residents of the area, is given a boost as this will build the capacity of persons interested in the field of study; who will in turn impart the knowledge directly onto farmers.

Speaking to Yoo Naa Yakubu Abdulai Andani at his Palace in Savelugu, the Vice President underscored the significance of agriculture in the country noting that the upgrading of the institution, which is one of the oldest in the region, would make a significant impact in the lives of many.

“The Akufo-Addo government intends to upgrade the Pong Tamale Agric College into a university to help promote the studies of Agriculture at an advanced level which will directly impact positively on food production among others”, he disclosed.

When this is done, it brings to two the number of public universities in the Northern Region after the University for Development Studies (UDS) which is the premier university of the north.


Background

The college was established in 1922 at Tamale, Northern Ghana, by the British colonial administration to increase the health of livestock in what was then the Gold Coast.

Unfortunately, in 1925, the school was closed due to funding shortfalls. In 1960, the college was rebuilt in Pong-Tamale and reopened and named Animal Health and Production College.

250 Labone students sacked for non-performance

Two hundred and fifty students of the Labone Senior High School (SHS) have been sacked for their abysmal performance in the end-of-year examination in July, this year. The students, who had an average of four failures in eight subjects, were sent packing when the first term of the 2014/2015 academic year began. Out of the number sacked, 155 of them were second-year students who were supposed to go to Form Three, while 95 were first-year students entering their second year.Also, 171 students who had an average of three failures in the examination have been asked to repeat their forms. About 800 Form Two students of the school were supposed to enter Form Three, while the number of first years who were expected to enter second year was 1,000. Family To Auction GHANASCO Cars As Govt Fails To Intervene

The family of late Lionel Mahama, a former headmaster of the Ghana Senior High School (Ghanasco) in Tamale, who won a court case against the school and Education service for wrongful demotion and freeze of salary, is ready to auction the confiscated assets of the school after failure by authorities, including government to pay a judgment debt awarded by the court.  Diana Awuni, daughter of the late headmaster told Starr News the family had finally secured a clearance document from the court and that a Kumasi-based auctioneer would arrive in Tamale in a fortnight to begin the process to liquidate the vehicles. It has emerged that the free senior high school education promised by President John Mahama, which he claims will be set in motion from the 2015/2016 academic year, is going to be at a cost of only GH¢50.00 per student. This is because with 365,000 day students, the government has budgeted GH¢18 million for the first term. Gov’t Intervenes As Court Orders Auctioning Of GHANASCO Cars

The Northern Regional Director of Education, Mohammed Haroon Cambodia has confirmed government will be paying a staggering GHC400,000 as judgment debt to a private citizen in order to stop the auctioning of vehicles belonging to the Ghana Senior High School in Tamale. Government is offering the bailout following a chronic transport difficulty that has hit the school for the last two years after a court order impounded the only bus for students and a brand new official pickup vehicle. Two Nissan patrol vehicles belonging to the Education directorate were also taken by the court. The vehicles were confiscated to be auctioned to pay up salary arrears of a former headmaster of the school who accused the school and education service of injustices including inappropriate dismissal and concealing his promotion letter.
