80 SHSs postpone reopening over delays in release of feeding grants

Over 80 Senior High Schools in the three northern regions have postponed their reopening dates following the failure of Government to release feeding grants.

Heads of some of the schools say they have no option than to let the students stay at home.

The students who were expected to report in school on April, 21 – which is tomorrow, have been asked to stay at home because school authorities cannot afford to feed them.

Some of the teachers who spoke to Joy News said they have been asked to remain at home until they hear news on the radio that the grants have been released.

They said they are worried about the contact hours which are going to be lost due to the time students are going to be at home, adding that it might affect them.

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools has been meeting over the issue.

Northern Regional Director of Ghana Education Service (GES) Alhaji Mohammed Harun says the decision to postpone reopening of the school is in the interest of the students.

He said the heads of the schools would have to take food items on credit but even this is impossible because they owe so much and their creditors have refused to give them anything until they clear up their existing debts.

It is better for the students to stay at home and eat good food than to come to school and be hungry, he said.

UDS Vice Chancellor kicks against conversion of polytechnics into universities

Vice Chancellor of the University for Development Studies (UDS) Prof. Gabriel Ayum Teye has made a case against the planned conversion of polytechnics into universities. According to him, the move will only increase the graduate unemployment population which currently stands at 300,000. This is according to data from the Institute of Statistical and Economic Research (ISSER). “Now we have 10 public universities that produce graduates and by next month we will have 16 public universities in Ghana. “So if you’re having problems with 10 and you add another 6 to it making 16 are you solving the problem or compounding it,” he queried. Prof Ayum Teye was speaking at the 22nd National Delegates’ Congress of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG) in Tamale. Concerned or misinformed doctors: My response to the unscientific petition by my colleagues to the president of Ghana

  I have resisted the urge to react to the lackluster petition put forward by the 11 “concerned” doctors to the president of Ghana asking the first gentleman of the land to stop the COVID-19 vaccination roll-out.  However, as a doctor and public health researcher, I am perturbed by the damaging effect and the likely consequences of the misrepresentation and the selective use of data by these “concerned” doctors.   Their write-up is full of inaccurate data reporting. Most of their sources do not pass the litmus test of full scientific rigor. Gov’t Intervenes As Court Orders Auctioning Of GHANASCO Cars

The Northern Regional Director of Education, Mohammed Haroon Cambodia has confirmed government will be paying a staggering GHC400,000 as judgment debt to a private citizen in order to stop the auctioning of vehicles belonging to the Ghana Senior High School in Tamale. Government is offering the bailout following a chronic transport difficulty that has hit the school for the last two years after a court order impounded the only bus for students and a brand new official pickup vehicle. Two Nissan patrol vehicles belonging to the Education directorate were also taken by the court. The vehicles were confiscated to be auctioned to pay up salary arrears of a former headmaster of the school who accused the school and education service of injustices including inappropriate dismissal and concealing his promotion letter.
