Sakawa boys bribed Northern chief to rename town Galaxy City

Some youth in the Northern Region, noted for engaging in cyber fraud known in Ghana as "sakawa", have allegedly bribed a prominent chief of the area to rename his town with a foreign name.

“They are proposing two names for the area, Galaxy City or La Palmas,” Northern Regional Minister Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna has said.

Even though the Minister would not name the chief involved, he said the chief initially rejected the suggestions and drove the "sakawa" boys out of his palace.

However, the determined boys, who said the name of the town “was not palatable”, decided to work through the chief’s advisors (elders).

Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna said the boys bribed the elders with ₵1,000.  They in turn led the boys to the chief, whom they offered a ₵4,000 bounty.

Apparently having the backing of the traditional leaders, these boys went to town misbehaving, splashing monies on the streets and daring anyone to come after them.

Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) says it will crack down on these cyber criminals and traditional authorities who are supporting them. 

The REGSEC has also resolved to wage a relentless fight against the increasing spate of indiscipline among the youth, especially "sakawa" boys within the Tamale metropolis.

Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna has also asked opinion leaders to refrain from interfering in the affairs of the police.

In a related development, police have begun investigations into what residents describe as a gun battle that ensued when a group of unidentified "sakawa" boys launched an attack on a rival group to celebrate the installation of their leader, Naa-Tia Shiraz Salifu as a chief by the Royal Regent of Dagbon.

Northern regional police spokesperson ASP Ebenezer Tetteh said what happened would be treated “purely as a criminal action”.

He called on residents to assist the police with information that would lead to the arrest of the marauding gangs.

250 Labone students sacked for non-performance

Two hundred and fifty students of the Labone Senior High School (SHS) have been sacked for their abysmal performance in the end-of-year examination in July, this year. The students, who had an average of four failures in eight subjects, were sent packing when the first term of the 2014/2015 academic year began. Out of the number sacked, 155 of them were second-year students who were supposed to go to Form Three, while 95 were first-year students entering their second year.Also, 171 students who had an average of three failures in the examination have been asked to repeat their forms. About 800 Form Two students of the school were supposed to enter Form Three, while the number of first years who were expected to enter second year was 1,000. Family To Auction GHANASCO Cars As Govt Fails To Intervene

The family of late Lionel Mahama, a former headmaster of the Ghana Senior High School (Ghanasco) in Tamale, who won a court case against the school and Education service for wrongful demotion and freeze of salary, is ready to auction the confiscated assets of the school after failure by authorities, including government to pay a judgment debt awarded by the court.  Diana Awuni, daughter of the late headmaster told Starr News the family had finally secured a clearance document from the court and that a Kumasi-based auctioneer would arrive in Tamale in a fortnight to begin the process to liquidate the vehicles. Gov’t Intervenes As Court Orders Auctioning Of GHANASCO Cars

The Northern Regional Director of Education, Mohammed Haroon Cambodia has confirmed government will be paying a staggering GHC400,000 as judgment debt to a private citizen in order to stop the auctioning of vehicles belonging to the Ghana Senior High School in Tamale. Government is offering the bailout following a chronic transport difficulty that has hit the school for the last two years after a court order impounded the only bus for students and a brand new official pickup vehicle. Two Nissan patrol vehicles belonging to the Education directorate were also taken by the court. The vehicles were confiscated to be auctioned to pay up salary arrears of a former headmaster of the school who accused the school and education service of injustices including inappropriate dismissal and concealing his promotion letter.
