Lamashegu: 6 police officers interdicted after shooting at Chief’s palace
Six police officers have been interdicted following violence in Lamashegu, Tamale, that left one person dead and eight wounded on Sunday afternoon.
Police and residents clashed after officers allegedly shot a 24-year-old man.
Police in a statement said a team of investigators had been dispatched to the area, led by the Deputy Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
“Personnel from the Police Professional Standards Bureau have also been detailed alongside the CID team to look at professional standard related issues of the incident,” a statement from police said.
The Northern Regional Police Commander has been tasked to liaise with the affected families and offer them the necessary support in line with Police Regulations.
Police further appealed to the people of Lamashegu and the entire Tamale Metropolis to remain calm as investigations continue into the unfortunate occurrence.
Initial reports indicated that the wounded man was chased to the Lamashegu Chief’s Palace, where he was shot by the officers for refusing to stop when he was ordered to do so.
The incident resulted in the burning of car tyres and wood on some major highways in Tamale.
Some agitated residents also hurled stones at the police patrol team who had come to the scene to restore calm.
There is currently joint police and military presence in the area to prevent an escalation of the violence.
Sources at the Tamale Teaching Hospital revealed that the deceased died of gunshot wounds and has been deposited at the Tamale Hospital morgue.
