Khaya is a mobile app that allows easy translation of selected Ghanaian Languages, in addition to Yoruba (a Nigerian Language). It comes at a time when the world is leaning more towards digitization.

Every bit of our socio-cultural and economic being is going online thanks to technology. A major component of globalization is communication. This makes Khaya a timely project. Speaking and understanding Ghanaian languages becomes more accessible. Even so, it represents the first step towards the preservation of Ghanaian languages.

Features of Khaya

This innovative piece of mobile application runs on both Android and iOS devices. It is essential for all who seek to translate sentences, words, or phrases from English to four other languages. It also allows for one to translate the same from the four mentioned African languages to English.

An interesting feature of this AI beauty is that it goes beyond the knowledge base of the creators. The application allows users to enter alternative meanings to words, phrases, and sentences. This feature suggests that the vocabulary base will continue to grow with a rise in users. For end-users who prefer a voice-to-text transcription, Khaya is definitely for you. This particular feature is definitely a favoritefor people interested in learning or speaking any of the languages.

How many languages can Khaya Translate?

Currently, Khaya features five languages, predominantly Ghanaian. The languages are Twi, Ga, Ewe, Yoruba, and English. The creators have indicated they're working around the clock to add several other African languages to the App, including Hausa, Dagbani, Swahili to mention just a few. They are also working on adding voices for text to speech pronunciation in future releases. The idea is to preserve languages, and offer diasporas, and non-speakers the opportunity to understand, speak and write the included languages.

The Brains behind Khaya

Khaya is the brainchild of two teams; the Algorine Research team and the Ghana Natural Language Processing group. The Ghanaian Scientist and Entrepreneur Paul Azunre, also known in showbiz as the musician Dr Pushkin, is an integral part of the team.

Family To Auction GHANASCO Cars As Govt Fails To Intervene

The family of late Lionel Mahama, a former headmaster of the Ghana Senior High School (Ghanasco) in Tamale, who won a court case against the school and Education service for wrongful demotion and freeze of salary, is ready to auction the confiscated assets of the school after failure by authorities, including government to pay a judgment debt awarded by the court.  Diana Awuni, daughter of the late headmaster told Starr News the family had finally secured a clearance document from the court and that a Kumasi-based auctioneer would arrive in Tamale in a fortnight to begin the process to liquidate the vehicles. 250 Labone students sacked for non-performance

Two hundred and fifty students of the Labone Senior High School (SHS) have been sacked for their abysmal performance in the end-of-year examination in July, this year. The students, who had an average of four failures in eight subjects, were sent packing when the first term of the 2014/2015 academic year began. Out of the number sacked, 155 of them were second-year students who were supposed to go to Form Three, while 95 were first-year students entering their second year.Also, 171 students who had an average of three failures in the examination have been asked to repeat their forms. About 800 Form Two students of the school were supposed to enter Form Three, while the number of first years who were expected to enter second year was 1,000. The action, according to the Headmistress of the school, Mrs Mary Amankwah, was in line with the school’s policy agreed upon by both the students and their parents at the time oftheir admissions. Soldiers Brutalise Students Of Wa Islamic School

Two students of the Islamic Senior High School in Wa were admitted to hospital yesterday following a high-handed military action to quell a stand-off between the students and the school authorities. The students, a male and a female, were the main casualties of an apparent simultaneous police and military action to break the front of the students, as their peaceful protest degenerated into chaos. The soldiers allegedly invaded the girls’ dormitory and started beating the riotous students following a call to the police to go to the school and restore order. The two students were being treated and monitored at the Islamic Hospital in Wa as of press time yesterday, hospital sources told the Daily Graphic. Gov’t Intervenes As Court Orders Auctioning Of GHANASCO Cars

The Northern Regional Director of Education, Mohammed Haroon Cambodia has confirmed government will be paying a staggering GHC400,000 as judgment debt to a private citizen in order to stop the auctioning of vehicles belonging to the Ghana Senior High School in Tamale. Government is offering the bailout following a chronic transport difficulty that has hit the school for the last two years after a court order impounded the only bus for students and a brand new official pickup vehicle. Two Nissan patrol vehicles belonging to the Education directorate were also taken by the court. The vehicles were confiscated to be auctioned to pay up salary arrears of a former headmaster of the school who accused the school and education service of injustices including inappropriate dismissal and concealing his promotion letter.
