WAEC cancels 5 BECE papers

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says it has cancelled 5 papers in the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) after discovering to its dismay the papers have been compromised.

The papers involved are:

  English Language 2,
  Religious and Moral Education 2;
  Integrated Science 2;
  Mathematics 2;
  Social Studies 2

The June 2015 BECE started only on Monday, June 15 and were expected to be completed on Friday, June 19. As many as 438,030 candidates were registered to write the examinations in 1,446 centres across the country.

WAEC said investigations were underway to unearth the full facts of the malpractice and assured it is determined to follow the case to its logical conclusion and will not shield any person, including its own, who will be found culpable.

A statement issued by WAEC Wednesday confirming the cancellation said the compromised papers will be re-administered on 29th and 30th June, 2015 and a time table for the tests would be circulated shortly.

“In addition to other sources, the papers have gone viral on social media especially WhatsApp Messenger,” the statement, signed by Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, said.

“In pursuance of its quest to demonstrate its abhorrence for examination malpractice of any sort, safeguard the sanctity of its examinations and integrity of certificates issued, the Council has CANCELLED the listed papers.

“As such, Social Studies 2 & 1 tests slated for tomorrow, 18th June, 2015 will not be administered. However, the remaining papers, that is, French and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will be taken as scheduled.”

“The Council regrets any inconvenience caused stakeholders and, in particular, candidates who did not involve themselves in the malpractice. It further calls on stakeholders to appreciate that the re-administration of the tests is in the interest of the candidates and to restore public confidence and credibility in the outcome of the examination.

Candidates and stakeholders are hereby assured the all the necessary measures are being put in place to forestall the recurrence of the malpractice.”

Family To Auction GHANASCO Cars As Govt Fails To Intervene

The family of late Lionel Mahama, a former headmaster of the Ghana Senior High School (Ghanasco) in Tamale, who won a court case against the school and Education service for wrongful demotion and freeze of salary, is ready to auction the confiscated assets of the school after failure by authorities, including government to pay a judgment debt awarded by the court.  Diana Awuni, daughter of the late headmaster told Starr News the family had finally secured a clearance document from the court and that a Kumasi-based auctioneer would arrive in Tamale in a fortnight to begin the process to liquidate the vehicles. 250 Labone students sacked for non-performance

Two hundred and fifty students of the Labone Senior High School (SHS) have been sacked for their abysmal performance in the end-of-year examination in July, this year. The students, who had an average of four failures in eight subjects, were sent packing when the first term of the 2014/2015 academic year began. Out of the number sacked, 155 of them were second-year students who were supposed to go to Form Three, while 95 were first-year students entering their second year.Also, 171 students who had an average of three failures in the examination have been asked to repeat their forms. About 800 Form Two students of the school were supposed to enter Form Three, while the number of first years who were expected to enter second year was 1,000. It has emerged that the free senior high school education promised by President John Mahama, which he claims will be set in motion from the 2015/2016 academic year, is going to be at a cost of only GH¢50.00 per student. This is because with 365,000 day students, the government has budgeted GH¢18 million for the first term. Gov’t Intervenes As Court Orders Auctioning Of GHANASCO Cars

The Northern Regional Director of Education, Mohammed Haroon Cambodia has confirmed government will be paying a staggering GHC400,000 as judgment debt to a private citizen in order to stop the auctioning of vehicles belonging to the Ghana Senior High School in Tamale. Government is offering the bailout following a chronic transport difficulty that has hit the school for the last two years after a court order impounded the only bus for students and a brand new official pickup vehicle. Two Nissan patrol vehicles belonging to the Education directorate were also taken by the court. The vehicles were confiscated to be auctioned to pay up salary arrears of a former headmaster of the school who accused the school and education service of injustices including inappropriate dismissal and concealing his promotion letter.
