Tamale Teaching Hospital receives crucial equipment boost

The Tamale Teaching Hospital has received equipment to cater for pregnant women and patients needing dialysis, curtailing the need to travel up to 501kilometers or 7 hours by road for the closest source of treatment.

Patients in Brong Ahafo, Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions have had to travel to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to get MRI and CT scans or a dialysis treatment for those who suffer kidney failure.

Outgoing Health Minister Dr. Kwaku Agyemang Mensah commissioned these facilities at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

The impact of these equipment is enormous for the region in the SADA enclave. Last year, eight expectant mothers died because they did not have access to an MRI machine and CT scan.

Now the Tamale Teaching Hospital will have to find how to run the equipment affordably yet profitably.

According to Chief Executive of the Tamale Teaching Hospital Prosper Akamnong, dialysis treatment costs between $150 to $200 at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

“We will look at the local circumstances and see how we can break even just to allow the service to be affordable…..there is no need to put a range that people can’t afford it but it will have to be reasonable enough”, CEO Prosper Akamnong told Joy News’ Seth Kwame Boateng.

The regions within the SADA enclave are among the most impoverished regions in Ghana.

But one other challenge the hospital would not have to worry about is reliable power supply.

The hospital has also secured a dedicated power line from Akosombo to supply them with 24 hour energy supply.

Family To Auction GHANASCO Cars As Govt Fails To Intervene

The family of late Lionel Mahama, a former headmaster of the Ghana Senior High School (Ghanasco) in Tamale, who won a court case against the school and Education service for wrongful demotion and freeze of salary, is ready to auction the confiscated assets of the school after failure by authorities, including government to pay a judgment debt awarded by the court.  Diana Awuni, daughter of the late headmaster told Starr News the family had finally secured a clearance document from the court and that a Kumasi-based auctioneer would arrive in Tamale in a fortnight to begin the process to liquidate the vehicles. 250 Labone students sacked for non-performance

Two hundred and fifty students of the Labone Senior High School (SHS) have been sacked for their abysmal performance in the end-of-year examination in July, this year. The students, who had an average of four failures in eight subjects, were sent packing when the first term of the 2014/2015 academic year began. Out of the number sacked, 155 of them were second-year students who were supposed to go to Form Three, while 95 were first-year students entering their second year.Also, 171 students who had an average of three failures in the examination have been asked to repeat their forms. About 800 Form Two students of the school were supposed to enter Form Three, while the number of first years who were expected to enter second year was 1,000. It has emerged that the free senior high school education promised by President John Mahama, which he claims will be set in motion from the 2015/2016 academic year, is going to be at a cost of only GH¢50.00 per student. This is because with 365,000 day students, the government has budgeted GH¢18 million for the first term. Gov’t Intervenes As Court Orders Auctioning Of GHANASCO Cars

The Northern Regional Director of Education, Mohammed Haroon Cambodia has confirmed government will be paying a staggering GHC400,000 as judgment debt to a private citizen in order to stop the auctioning of vehicles belonging to the Ghana Senior High School in Tamale. Government is offering the bailout following a chronic transport difficulty that has hit the school for the last two years after a court order impounded the only bus for students and a brand new official pickup vehicle. Two Nissan patrol vehicles belonging to the Education directorate were also taken by the court. The vehicles were confiscated to be auctioned to pay up salary arrears of a former headmaster of the school who accused the school and education service of injustices including inappropriate dismissal and concealing his promotion letter.
