Severe water crisis hits Tamale

Image
The Northern Regional capital Tamale has been hit by severe water crisis. The worrying development during this Christmas season is making life in the Tamale Metro Area unexciting. The water crisis coupled with the Harmattan weather has kept most residents disappointed. According to reports, the taps have not been flowing for close to two weeks. Management of Ghana Water Company has kept mute on the situation, leaving residents of the affected communities angry. The affected communities include Sabonjida, Kukuo, Changli, Dohin-Naayili and Moshie Zongo. The situation is gradually crippling commercial activities in the Tamale Metro Area. Restaurant operators, Hoteliers, washing bays, laundry service providers are grappling with the situation. Some of them who cannot afford to pay for exorbitant charges by water tanker service providers bemoaned the situation and called for immediate solutions. The Tamale Teaching Hospital which needs constant water supply is among some of affecte...

The innocent casualties of unnecessary war.

Image
How anyone could continue to harm completely innocent civilians is something I will never understand. Children growing up around the devastation of war are often subject to the by-product of war arms, i.e., radiation and firearm-induced amputation. Whether one supports the ‘war on terror’ or not, one can’t argue the absurdity of killing innocent children in the name of defending one’s own country.

How pharmaceuticals are both turning a population into zombies and killing us at a not-so-slow pace.

The Times analysis of 2009 death statistics showed: *For the first time ever in the US, more people were killed by drugs than motor vehicle accidents *37,485 people died from drugs, a rate fueled by overdoses on prescription pain and anxiety medications, versus 36,284 from traffic accidents *Drug fatalities more than doubled among teens and young adults between 2000 and 2008, and more than tripled among people aged 50 to 69 These facts are based off of legal prescription drug statistics. An estimated 450,000 preventable medication-related adverse events occur in the U.S. every year. The costs of adverse drug reactions to society are more than $136 billion annually — greater than the total cost of cardiovascular or diabetic care. Looking over records from 1976 to 2006, researchers found 62 million death certificates related to prescription drugs, almost a quarter-million of these deaths were coded as having occurred in a hospital setting due to medication errors. How is this ...

‘Generation Notification'; the social media crazed population.

Image
Social media has undoubtedly changed our way of connecting through the world wide web, but whether or not this was for the better is debatable by many.  Today we see a high percentage of youth and adults literally addicted to their phones, iPads, or laptops. It’s almost beginning to move towards the physical merging of technology and man, where the line between social media reality and the everyday reality is continuously becoming blurred. There are now multiple social media platforms available for people to get lost in, many of which are great at wasting our time aimlessly scrolling through a never-ending news feed. How will this relationship with social media continue to grow in the coming years? I’m somewhat nervous to find out…

How female sexuality is used to divert the attention of a hormone-driven population of men.

Image
It’s rampant throughout all forms of media today. The hyper-sexualized image of women, used to stimulate a testosterone-driven population of men. Not only is this prevalent in the media but it is also commonly witnessed in various aspects of modern-day culture. For example, many restaurants or lounges force girls to wear skirts, heals, even boots, all to appeal to a specific audience. Female pop stars and celebrities are also usually exploited sexually in the mainstream media. Just another example of the dominating male influences at the top of the ladder.

The force-feeding of cheap food to the docile and lethargic public.

Image
With the cost of living continuing to rise at a rapid pace, and an economy which, especially in the U.S., is pushing more and more people into the lower socio-economic bracket, many families and students are basically being force-fed fast and cheap food as their only financial option. Proper nutrition keeps us running at our optimal cognitive and energetic capacities, a lack of nutrition keeps a nation lethargic and docile.

The censorship of free-thought and the consequences which follow voicing our opinion.

Image
In a nation stating itself to be ‘free’, it’s interesting how many laws, regulations and fear programs exist which limit our choices and thoughts. One can get locked away simply for defying their government’s belief systems. I’m curious how long people will continue to let this censorship take place.

Religion’s ‘helping’ hand in poverty.

Image
It’s no secret that the predominant religious institutions are some of the wealthiest bodies  in our world today. Yet even among all of the collections of gold and assets, their high-stakes morals, and their claim to be the world’s path to salvation, the religious institutions have failed to help solve the poverty pandemic worldwide. This is  something they surely have the finances to, at the very least, drastically reduce. Ironically enough, many of the developing nations of people are enveloped in the lure of organized religion, following the teachings ever so diligently without drawing a connection to the fact that these religious institutions have the means to help, but simply are not.

To My Porn-Watching Dad, From Your Daughter

Dear Dad, I want to let you know first of all that I love you and forgive you for what this has done in my life. I also wanted to let you know exactly what your porn use has done to my life. You may think that this effects only you, or even your and mom’s relationships. But it has had a profound impact on me and all of my siblings as well. I found your porn on the computer somewhere around the age of 12 or so, just when I was starting to become a young woman. First of all, it seemed very hypocritical to me that you were trying to teach me the value of what to let into my mind in terms of movies, yet here you were entertaining your mind with this junk on a regular basis. Your talks to me about being careful with what I watched meant virtually nothing. Because of pornography, I was aware that mom was not the only woman you were looking at. I became acutely aware of your wandering eye when we were out and about. This taught me that all men have a wandering eye and can’t be t...

Fire guts Tamale Aboabo Market

Image
Fire early Tuesday morning gutted portions of the Tamale Aboabo Market, destroying wares and other properties. Among items destroyed were large quantities of foodstuff that included maize, millet, rice and sorghum. The lack of access roads into the market made it difficult for personnel of the Fire Service to reach out to the affected stalls on time. Their intervention however helped in containing the raging fire from spreading out to other facilities. Scores of victims of the fire could be seen wailing over their loss as relations and colleagues consoled them. There were no casualties. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained by the Fire Service.  According to an eye witness however, the fire started at about 2am this morning. He explained that the portion of the stalls that were gutted had not been connected to electricity. “What I suspect is that the fire might have been started by some wee smokers who often take over the stalls at night as their home and engage...

Mahama Free SHS Is GH¢50

Image
It has emerged that the free senior high school education promised by President John Mahama, which he claims will be set in motion from the 2015/2016 academic year, is going to be at a cost of only GH¢50.00 per student. This is because with 365,000 day students, the government has budgeted GH¢18 million for the first term. While the policy, which was a major campaign message of Nana Akufo-Addo, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate ahead of the 2012 controversial elections – was meant to cover all senior high school students, Mahama’s version is restricted to day students with a questionable cost as officials fumble on the actual cost of the programme Interestingly, the education ministry’s newly approved fees for public schools is pegged at GH¢385.00 for a day student per term – far more than what government had budgeted for its yet-to-take-off free SHS – while boarders are to pay GH¢668.00 per student. Deputy Ministe...

Image
Five students of the Bolgatanga Senior High School in the Upper East Region have been arrested following an overnight rampage by some students who were protesting the death of a colleague on Monday. An intervention by the police to prevent further clashes also led to five other students being hospitalized for various degrees of injuries. The students are protesting the death of their colleague who according to them, jumped to his death after the Senior House Master gave him a hot chase. According to Citi News’ Upper East correspondent, Fedrick Awuni, “at the girls dormitory, five girls who were seriously suffocating were rushed to the Bolgantanga regional hospital for treatment after the Police fired tear gas at the students.” The Police Commander of the Upper East Regional Police Command, ASP Boakye said some policemen were injured in the process and were also rushed to the hospital while two of their patrol screens were damaged.
