Prez Mahama breaks ground for Tamale Airport expansion

President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday announced that Government would build three new airports to augment the existing ones and make air travel accessible to all Ghanaians.

The new airports, he said, would be sited at Ho, Bolgatanga, and Cape Coast.

President Mahama said this when he broke the grounds for the commencement of work on the expansion project of the Tamale Airport into an international airport as part of his two-day official visit to the Northern Region.

Phase one of the expansion programme would include installation of Aeronautical Ground Lightening and would be able to accommodate Boeing 747 up to Boeing 800 series of aircraft.

The $100 million project would also extend and expand the runway up to 4,000 metres with additional aprons and perimeter road and security fence.

The programme was also attended by ministers of state, paramount chiefs from the region, members of Parliament and members of the Diplomatic Corps.

President Mahama said with globalisation it was expedient for Government to upgrade facilities at various airports to fall in tune with current international standards.

He said apart from the Tamale Airport, similar upgrading facilities would be provided at the Kumasi Airport in order to have three international airports, while the Takoradi and Wa airports would also be provided with permanent terminals.

President Mahama appealed to vegetable farmers to take advantage of the expansion programmes to step up vegetable production to feed international markets.

Mrs Dzifa Attivor, Minister of Transport, said Government would soon acquire a national airline that would reclaim the past glories of the performance of Ghana Airways.

She said Government was also carrying out expansion programmes at all the airports and airstrips in the country.

Mr Charles K. Asare, Acting Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited, said growth in the aviation industry had a correlation with economic development in terms job creation and market stability.

He said within the last past years, the aviation industry had increased by 25 per cent which had also increased airport tariffs for upgrading and construction of more airports in the country.

Mr Asare said major security measures were underway to take care of the traffic that would be experienced as a result of the expansion projects.

He said as part of those measures, CCTV cameras would be installed at the Kotoka International Airport and subsequently to all other airports in the country.

Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, Northern Regional Minister, gave the assurance that every community in the region would continue to receive its share of development projects in spite of the economic challenges Government was facing.

He commended President Mahama for fulfilling his campaign promises in the 2012 general election and appealed to the traditional authorities to provide the necessary support for the execution of development projects.

Family To Auction GHANASCO Cars As Govt Fails To Intervene

The family of late Lionel Mahama, a former headmaster of the Ghana Senior High School (Ghanasco) in Tamale, who won a court case against the school and Education service for wrongful demotion and freeze of salary, is ready to auction the confiscated assets of the school after failure by authorities, including government to pay a judgment debt awarded by the court.  Diana Awuni, daughter of the late headmaster told Starr News the family had finally secured a clearance document from the court and that a Kumasi-based auctioneer would arrive in Tamale in a fortnight to begin the process to liquidate the vehicles. 250 Labone students sacked for non-performance

Two hundred and fifty students of the Labone Senior High School (SHS) have been sacked for their abysmal performance in the end-of-year examination in July, this year. The students, who had an average of four failures in eight subjects, were sent packing when the first term of the 2014/2015 academic year began. Out of the number sacked, 155 of them were second-year students who were supposed to go to Form Three, while 95 were first-year students entering their second year.Also, 171 students who had an average of three failures in the examination have been asked to repeat their forms. About 800 Form Two students of the school were supposed to enter Form Three, while the number of first years who were expected to enter second year was 1,000. Soldiers Brutalise Students Of Wa Islamic School

Two students of the Islamic Senior High School in Wa were admitted to hospital yesterday following a high-handed military action to quell a stand-off between the students and the school authorities. The students, a male and a female, were the main casualties of an apparent simultaneous police and military action to break the front of the students, as their peaceful protest degenerated into chaos. The soldiers allegedly invaded the girls’ dormitory and started beating the riotous students following a call to the police to go to the school and restore order. The two students were being treated and monitored at the Islamic Hospital in Wa as of press time yesterday, hospital sources told the Daily Graphic. Gov’t Intervenes As Court Orders Auctioning Of GHANASCO Cars

The Northern Regional Director of Education, Mohammed Haroon Cambodia has confirmed government will be paying a staggering GHC400,000 as judgment debt to a private citizen in order to stop the auctioning of vehicles belonging to the Ghana Senior High School in Tamale. Government is offering the bailout following a chronic transport difficulty that has hit the school for the last two years after a court order impounded the only bus for students and a brand new official pickup vehicle. Two Nissan patrol vehicles belonging to the Education directorate were also taken by the court. The vehicles were confiscated to be auctioned to pay up salary arrears of a former headmaster of the school who accused the school and education service of injustices including inappropriate dismissal and concealing his promotion letter.
